A Car Collector’s Dream: 40-Acre Michigan Estate with Two-Story Garage Up for Auction

By V.L. Hendrickson |  MANSION GLOBAL -

A 40-acre estate with a two-story garage on Lake Michigan will go to the highest bidder in an online, no-reserve auction on June 11, according to Interluxe, the North Carolina-based luxury property auction company.

The four-bedroom, seven-bathroom and one-half bathroom home in Holland, Michigan, was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie-style homes, according to Kyle Schrader, business development director at Interluxe. It was originally listed for $5.6 million in August 2018 by Wendy Ryder of Associate Broker at Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt Holland.

Completed in 2004, the home was also the final design of Don Steenwyk, a local architect behind many of the area’s prominent homes. His firm, Steenwyk Architects, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is now run by his son.

The property was designed with entertainment in mind, starting with its 12,000-square-foot, two-story garage. The owner, who is a car collector, created a space to store up to 30 vehicles, whether it’s a refurbished Mustang or a boat for cruising nearby Lake Michigan or Lake Macatawa.

“It’s in Western Michigan, so it’s near the water and also easy to hop on a state interstate for a scenic drive,” said Mr. Schrader, adding that the local roads are very well maintained.

The temperature-controlled garage also has two locker rooms, a full bathroom, a laundry room and sitting area, and it connects to the main house via an underground tunnel. There’s room for dirt bikes and ATVs, as well, which can be used throughout the trails on the property or its mile-long motocross track.

There’s a two-acre pond on the property, Mr. Schrader said, which becomes an ice-skating rink in the winter. Guests and residents can also mountain bike, snowmobile or cross-country ski throughout the estate. There’s also an outdoor entertaining area with a pool, hot tub, patio and summer kitchen.

Michigan’s great outdoors can be enjoyed from the inside of the home, too. The formal living room and master suite feature glass-mitered corners, one of Wright’s signatures. And floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining room and several bedrooms allow for views of the grounds.

The property is being sold with its furniture, much of which was specifically designed for the home. Built-in shelving, furniture and cabinetry can be found throughout the home, and are made from a mixture of teak, rift-cut white oak, and African wenge, according to the listing.

The same owner has used the property since building the home, and has other properties in the area. But the family’s needs have shifted, and they are spending more time closer to their children’s schools.

It could not be ascertained from property records how much the owner paid for the property.

Previews of the property will be available Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9, according to Mr. Schrader.
